3. Respiratory problems: people who smoke pot are especially susceptible to ruined lungs and even bronchitis in the long run; for this alone should be reason enough to quit marijuana use.

4. Addiction: marijuana has been shown to be highly addictive with as high as 10% of people who use it becoming dependent.

Social Effects of Marijuana Use

Socially, marijuana addiction can cause strained interpersonal relationships as many addicts, unless they are hanging out with their smoking buddies, tend to isolate themselves in order to indulge in their habit. In addition, addicts may experience problems at work especially for skipping work or showing up high when they manage to make it to work. Anyone addicted to marijuana will often experience financial difficulties as they use their money to support this very expensive habit, so it is vital that they quit marijuana.

Marijuana use also has other far reaching effects; studies show that of the people who use or have used marijuana, 26% goes on to use cocaine and 9% use heroin. 54% also go on to abuse mind altering prescription drugs. Crime and marijuana have a positive correlation. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency states that 40% of males arrested for crimes have tested positive for marijuana. Finally, next to alcohol, marijuana is the second most common substance found in the blood of people involved in fatal automobile accidents. These statistics are grim on any scale and are sufficient reasons to stop smoking marijuana. The situation is aggravated further by the fact that lobbyists and marijuana advocates are trying to push for its legalization, touting its medical benefits as a justification.
